Today was our first day using the online writing tool MyAccess. Students logged onto classroom computers and started to explore this amazing site. Remember, you can log onto this website from anywhere that has internet! You don't have to be at school. If you have not received your username yet, Ms. Nielsen has it. Additionally, there will always be a paper with usernames in the class if you forget what yours is. Take some time to explore this website, there are so many great tools to work with and improve your writing! Log in info: username: (given to you from Ms. Nielsen) password: (school lunch number) Website: www.myaccess.com Today we talked more about the first trait of writing, ideas. One of the major components of having good ideas that translate well into writing is having good details. Writers who use good details can be related to looking out the window with a pair of binoculars, you see things much more clearly. Using our six traits of writing rubric we read the story "Cloud with a Change of Meatballs" to focus on ideas and details in writing. The homework assignment due on September 11 is as follows: "Write about your favorite toy, this toy could be from your childhood or from right now or even something in between" Requirements: Must be at least 1/2 page (can be written or typed) Must have the title "Toy Story" in the top middle of the paper Must have your first and last name on the top right side of paper Circle or underline the details in your story (descriptive words, adjectives, adverbs, etc.) Attached is my example to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.
Today we discussed the first of the 6 traits of writing; ideas. We discussed how important details are when trying to convey ideas to your audience. Then we looked at several pictures and tried to describe them in as much detail to partners.
Today we finished the 6 traits of writing process in our table groups. We also learned about the mnemonic device:
"I'm On Vacation With Santa Claus" which stands for-- I= Ideas O= Organization V= Voice W= Word Choice S= Sentence Fluency C= Conventions Today students were introduced to the 6 traits of writing: 1: Ideas 2: Organization 3: Voice 4: Word Choice 5: Sentence Fluency 6: Conventions Students started working on posters highlighting one of the traits at their table. Additionally, students were introduced to the idea of rubrics through making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They then received the six traits of writing rubric to use a a resource for future writing assignments.
Today we were introduced to the writing process. Class consisted of a powerpoint and group discussion about what went into the writing process and how the writing process helps every kind of writer create a better piece of work. Students also received their 1st quarter reading logs. Remember: Your reading log is due on October 26th and you need to read 400 pages.
